41°N Contributor Guidelines

41°N is a publication that shares the untold stories of the Ocean State concerning scientific research and discovery, maritime history and culture, and issues related to our marine and coastal resources. Articles are published on topics related to coastal and ocean science, communities, economies, resources, people, and history. Contributors, please note:

- The magazine does not take an advocacy position on issues. Articles must present well researched information with sources cited.

- All contributions must be checked by authors for accuracy with any interviewees or other content providers. A list of references should be included if applicable.

- Topics and style should be geared toward an educated, adult general readership, and make scientific or policy topics understandable to that audience in an engaging way.
- Pay rates will be determined upon consultation with the editor and agreed to before work is to begin. All contributors must register in the URI Vendor System.
- Contributors will be asked to submit writing samples. Rhode Island Sea Grant and the URI Coastal Institute are located at the URI Graduate School of Oceanography.
Feature Articles are generally around 2,000 to 3,000 words that typically focus on discussing a broader topic and must include multiple sources of information and interviews applying APA style guidelines. We accept full article submissions or brief, well-researched paragraph about your idea(s).
Brief Articles may feature one or more interviewees and range from 400 to 600 words. These can focus more on specific details and/or people.
Profiles of interesting members of the community who are engaged in ocean or coastal resources
Book Reviews, featuring recent publications, of 300 to 500 words.
